|
Finland hosted the 18th highest number of international association meetings in the world in 2009. The ranking is based on the latest statistics published by the Union of International Associations (UIA). Compared with the previous year Finland’s position fell by one place. Nevertheless, Finland has retained its position among the top 20 congress destinations in the world for the past twenty years. Last year Finland hosted a total of 153 international association meetings or 1.5 percent of the worldwide total of 11,968 congresses. Among the Nordic countries Finland was the second most popular congress destination after Sweden, with Denmark and Norway close behind in 20th and 21st positions. Among cities Helsinki ranked 20th in the world as a venue for congresses. UIA gathers statistics on meetings and each year publishes a list of the world’s leading congress countries and cities. This year’s survey included 194 countries and 1653 cities. The number one congress country in the world in 2009 was the USA, whereas the leading congress city was once again Singapore. According to UIA, the annual growth in the number of congresses declined from around ten percent to four percent, primarily due to the situation in the global economy. « Back |
