”The increased hotel capacity allows even larger events to be organised in this region,” says Juha Kivelä, Managing Director of the North Karelia Cooperative (Pohjois-Karjalan Osuuskauppa). The 6000-square-metre extension of Sokos Hotel Vaakuna includes 81 new hotel rooms, increasing the total number of rooms to 144. The colours selected for the interior décor reflect the Finnish forest. The wall-to-wall carpeting along the corridors are like a mossy forest path leading to the hotel rooms, and the lace-like design on the bedcovers suggests the rich handicrafts traditions of Karelia. “The interior design of the hotel is based on the North Karelian landscape. Accordingly, the colours of spruce forests, the autumn foliage and frozen fields can all be found in the new hotel rooms,” says Nina Mattila from the design company N & O Oy. Low emission M1 classification surface materials were used to minimise indoor emissions. In addition, energy efficient lighting solutions have been used that do not increase the heat load. A large ceiling lamp radiates light with a natural warmth through a “skylight window”.
The restaurant Amarillo is now situated on the ground floor of the hotel extension and can seat 480 customers. The restaurant’s kitchen can prepare up to 400 servings an hour. In front of the restaurant is a glassed-in terrace in which radiant heaters effectively extend the summer season. « Back |
