Ambitious Aalto University takes on the world
Finland's new Aalto University will be set to become one of the leading educational and research institutions in the world. "Aalto will play an important role in making Finnish universities even more competitive," highlights President Tuula Teeri.

"The successful transformation of Finnish
universities will help Finland become one of the global leaders in
expertise," says Tuula Teeri, President of the new Aalto University.
Aalto University is the result of a merger between Helsinki University of Technology, Helsinki School of Economics and the University of Art and Design Helsinki. Aalto's objective is quite simply to be one of the world's leading universities by 2020.
"The university will focus on those disciplines in which Finland has traditionally been strong and that are most essential in terms of global competitiveness. We will promote the creation of new expertise, tight co-operation with industry and broad national and international networking," Teeri says.
The goal of Aalto University is to enhance the quality of education and research and to stimulate inter-disciplinary co-operation. Improving entrepreneurial skills and creating innovation systems will also be emphasised.
"Profiling ourselves in this way and also increasing the amount of teaching in English will help us achieve our goal of becoming one of the world's leading universities," Teeri explains. "By stimulating interdiscip-linary co-operation we can also nurture the creation of new ideas."
The Aalto University project involves the active participation students, teachers, researchers, industry and society. "We want to create a scientific community that crosses traditional barriers. In doing so we can create the conditions for realising new and commercially interesting ideas that over time will also help create new workplaces."
